A Common Sense Guide to Technology

Common Sense is dedicated to helping kids thrive in a world of media and technology.  We empower parents, teachers, and policymakers by providing unbiased information, trusted advice, and innovative tools to help them harness the power of media and technology as a positive force in all kids’ lives.
Media and technology are at the very center of all our lives today -- especially our children’s.  Kids today spend over 50 hours of screen time every week. The media content they consume and create has a profound impact on their social, emotional, cognitive, and physical development.  Learning how to use media and technology wisely is an essential skill for life and learning in the 21st century. But parents, teachers, and policymakers struggle to keep up with the rapidly changing digital world in which our children live and learn.  Now more than ever, they need a trusted guide to help them navigate a world where change is the only constant.

Read-A-Thon

Dear TIS Families;

We are excited to kick off our 2016 Read-A-thon Challenge!  We invite your entire family to participate in this event with your child.  The Read-A-Thon will run from Sunday, February 14th through Friday, March 4th.  TIS will also sponsor a Dr. Seuss theme week from Monday, February 29th –Friday, March 4th.  The theme days are listed on the back of this letter.

The Read-A-Thon’s goal is to promote reading as a fun and exciting activity while raising funds for reading programs at Troy Intermediate School.  Through pledges supporting individual students’ reading efforts, proceeds will benefit the following:
                                                                                                            Battle of the Books Club
                                                                                                            Scholastic Reading Programs
                                                                                                            TIS Library & Media Materials
                                                                                                            Classroom Reading Resources

This fundraiser is simple, here is how it works:

 Collect Sponsors:  Your child will ask people to sponsor them by pledging to pay for each minute he/she reads.  Sponsors can pay per minute read or a flat donation amount.  Pledge example:  .10/minute or a flat rate of $25.00 donation.  Checks can be made payable to TIS PTSO.  Begin collecting sponsors TODAY!
 Read!  Your child will be given a “reading record” calendar to keep track of minutes each   day.  The goal is for each student to read at least 20 min. per day.  After recording minutes, parents/guardians are asked to initial each day for verification.  Your child can read to themselves, to you or a sibling to make it fun!
Turn in Pledge Form & Reading Record:  Be sure your child has collected all pledges and donations from each sponsor.  Pledge forms and reading records will be handed in to your child’s homeroom teacher by Monday, March 7th.
We understand that, as parents, you hold high expectations for the quality of education your child receives during the school day.  By encouraging him or her to participate in the read-a-thon, you are expanding upon this learning and taking it into your home, increasing the school’s effectiveness.

Thank you for your continued support to Troy Intermediate School students.  Together we CAN make a difference.
